Strong growth orientation doubled revenue – searching for new talents to join the team!
PehuTec's growth efforts started a few years ago in a challenging market situation. Nokia's major redundancies appreciably affected the IT sector in the Oulu region, many had doubts about the recovery of the industry. The challenging situation didn´t scare PehuTec but it was seen as a place of growth, the company hired new talents according to its ability. At the same time, internationalization efforts were started with the help of external consultancy support. However, the biggest effort in strategic growth was made with the acquisition of Lewel Group in 2015. The acquisition supported the growth strategy, strengthened and expanded the know-how and gave modern customer relationship management tools and planning systems for HW and mechanical projects. In addition, new customer groups were opened to expand PehuTec's customer base.
The markets did not support the growth pace and PehuTec's growth strategy began to wrap. During the autumn 2016, it was necessary to make some inconvenient solutions when Lewel Group was driven down. The activity was re-consolidated under one company. The business arrangement gave focus and was a sensible game business. During the next accounting period, PehuTec achieved 100% growth in net sales and achieved positive results. It was the result of hard work where the entire staff played an important role. In addition to stabilizing the economy, PehuTec received its certified quality system in 2017, now the company has an ISO13485 standard operating system required for the medical device development.
Opening office in Helsinki
Growth has continued strong during the last autumn and the early part of the year 2018. At present there is a growth rate of more than 35%, but the will and the traces are even more rapid growth. The company is opening an office in Helsinki and looking for new talents to join the team. The company's goals are ambitious in every area. Big part of the turnover is currently being provided by customer projects, PehuTec's strategic goal is to strengthen its own product business when digitization is proceeding in many different industrial areas. There is a lot to be done and challenges to be won. However, PehuTec's first own IoT product Wiljami was selected to KasvuOpen, where Pekka Päivärinta, CEO of PehuTec, was presenting Wiljami to the jury. "We are looking forward to taking all the knowledge and experience from the race and utilizing it both for Wiljami and for developing and marketing our future products," says Päivärinta.
PehuTec's first own product is included among the most potential businesses
Maaseudun Kasvupolut has selected 15 growth potential companies from 57 applicants. PehuTec's first own IoT product Wiljami got involved in the race.
The first Kasvu Open sparring was held on January 25, where Pekka Päivärinta, CEO of PehuTec, was presenting Wiljami. The second sparring day will be held on March 15, after which the jury will select the two best companies that will advance to the nationwide finals, Kasvu Open Carnival in October 2018.
Wiljami grain moisture meter has been developed for continuous measurement of grain moisture. The device measures grain moisture and temperature in real time and continuously from the dryer directly. The drying process can be monitored and controlled via a smartphone or computer. Wiljami's Intelligent IoT (Internet of Things) solution ensures just the right grain moisture. Remote monitoring and automatic stopping of drying process make the everyday life of farmers easier, time is released for other things.
NB-IoT revolution is coming
New technology brings cost and power efficiency
Internet of Things (IOT) is seen as a major technology change in digitalization of industries. Narrow Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is a new 3GPP standard initiated at Release 13. It's a cellular based connectivity technology that focuses on 'low power wide area' (LPWA). Major chipset design companies have been active in creating first NB-IoT products. There will be essential advancements added in Release 14.
So far IoT components hasve had limited success in industrial use or and consumer products, such as wearables. This is due to the drawbacks of existing connectivity standards. Low-power connectivity was is limited to short-range (like Bluetooth Low Energy). The cellular modems have longer connectivity, but are consuming higher power. The new coming NB-IOT chips are supposed to be much simpler in design. The design focus is in efficiently designed memory, processing, and a light cellular modem. These mean products can be highly cost effective, suitable for mass production, and ultra-low power giving the remarkably extended usage times.
NB-IoT uses existing network technologies
The reuse of earlier 2G spectrum, or inter-bands or guard bands of the 4G spectrum gives a huge, global radio networks coverage for NB-IoT based connected devices. One modem product can support a full range of global bands, which allows devices to be shipped to large number of telecom operators. This essential feature means only a single NB-IoT device needs to be designed to address worldwide markets, reducing cost and development time.
As NB-IOT is based on global 3GPP based specifications, the development of standardized components is on the way. These are reaching the market this year in limited volumes, but during 2018 there will be explosive grown in delivery capacity. Standardized technology gives each developer companies a huge advantage as there is plenty of test equipment manufactures completing solutions for verification. As NB-IOT is based on evolution of 3G and 4G radio technologies, design houses are obtaining well-competent design staff. This serves an intermediate professional stage for many developers before moving 5G development.

Becoming a globally adopted radio solution, NB-IOT will play a major role as connectivity solution for many industries in our connected world. It allows a secure, trusted, cost-effective, well-functioning data pipe from any location having cellular network to the cloud. This also means that a few earlier adopted, more local competing technologies will disappear. Companies operating in big data analysis can see a major step in amount of measured amount of real life data, which further drives of usage of big data in decision making.
All these assets allow one NB-IOT component for large-scale roll out, making it highly suitable for international business, worldwide delivery, more local use or consumer products with battery life well beyond that of existing devices. As such, it's expected that NB-IoT enabled devices will empower the explosive growth of IoT in the next decade.
