Keypoint ja IXUcare® – 4D radar sensors for monitoring the safety of nursing home residents.

Keypoint Oy is a long-established domestic industrial operator. Keypoint designs and manufactures laser components for logistics and industry, as well as 4D radar-guided safety solutions for logistics.

Keypoint is also responsible for the design, manufacture, and sale of Theralux laser therapy devices. The company is based in Jyväskylä and was founded by Jorma Orkosalo in 1991.

Keypoint and PehuTec had collaborated in the software development for the Theralux devices, and the joint development continued with the next product.

PehuTec joins Keypoint’s ERDF-funded IXUcare project: Keypoint embarked on designing a new solution for their current catalog. PehuTec eagerly joined the project, as they already had the expertise and experience needed.

The idea behind Keypoint’s project was to utilize their radars in new environments and for decision-making and actions. Since radars are highly accurate, why not use them more to enhance the safety of people and property without compromising privacy. One of the project’s goals was to use Keypoint’s intelligent 4D radar sensors to monitor the safety of residents in care homes, such as notifying supervisors of falls, unusual situations, or arrivals, all without personal identification.

The parties finalized the definitions and PehuTec implemented a technical solution to this intriguing project. The solution consisted of room-specific sensors connected via Wi-Fi to an LTE router. The sensors send detections through the LTE router to the cloud, where they are processed. Desired types of detections, such as a person falling, send notifications via text message to handlers. The sensor data can also be viewed through a web interface on a phone, tablet, or computer. The web interface allows users to see alerts, logs, and, for example, define the sensors and their locations.

The solution is simple yet effective. Its applications are not limited to care homes, as there are many possibilities. The solution enhances safety in Keypoint’s customers’ areas of responsibility and business operations.
