TANA – Smart waste management solution: a digital dashboard within reach.
Tana Oy is a growth company in environmental technology, founded in 1971. It provides smart machines and solutions for solid waste management. Tana’s headquarters and R&D Center are located in Jyväskylä, Finland. The product portfolio includes waste shredders, disc screens, and landfill compactors. These products are sold in over 50 countries through more than 30 authorized Tana dealers.
Tana wanted to make its waste management tools even smarter — and that’s where PehuTec came into the picture. PehuTec conducted a successful preliminary study for Tana, exploring the needs and possibilities for remote access to TANA machines. During the study, our CTO Jani Seppälä demonstrated potential functionality using a robot.
Following PehuTec’s preliminary study, the long-considered project at Tana — enabling remote access to TANA machines via tablet — moved into the scheduling, specification, and evaluation phase. After the assessments, it was time to take action. A skilled developer and an experienced project manager from PehuTec joined the Tana-led project. Based on the defined requirements, the tablet application was given structure and, under PehuTec’s guidance, a technological foundation. The chosen technology was Flutter, which, in addition to ease of development and flexibility, offers Tana the possibility to expand the native application to multiple platforms in the future.
The project progressed according to the requirements, and the tablet application was developed iteratively based on Tana’s feedback. Collaboration with Tana and other project stakeholders went smoothly. The result was an application capable of connecting to a TANA machine and displaying real-time data related to performance, waste processing, and maintenance. The intuitive user interface also allows adjustment of waste processing programs and, for example, reading and acknowledging alarm events. Thanks to the camera feed provided by the application, remote monitoring of waste processing became possible.
Tana gained a new smart way to deliver added value to its customers. Customers can stay away from hazardous waste while continuing to operate in a familiar, proven — and now improved — way.
